Spatial Bending

Architecture · Parametric Design · Fabrication

A four-stage structural exploration of bending — from a cantilevered bending plate to a controlled-bending frame, then a curved façade and roof, and finally a reinforced hanging structure that uses bent strings as both load-bearing roof and decorative façade.

Spatial Bending walks through four stages of structural development:

  1. Bending Plate — extreme equilibrium of a cantilevering structure under single or multiple loads.
  2. Controlled-Bending Frame — chains as controllable weight, strings as controllable counterweight, modulating the curvature of wooden strips.
  3. Curved Façade & Roof — a house structure where bending strings carry the load as both roof and decorative façade; the second floor hangs from the roof.
  4. Reinforced Hanging Structure — added trusses and columns improve stability, while coffering patterns are introduced into the floor plate.
